Cofre's take · week of Oct 25, 2026

Modern PSA 10 premiums keep shrinking while vintage pulls away

  • The gap between a modern chase card raw and that card in a PSA 10 keeps closing, and the squeeze has steepened over the last few months. Vintage 10s have climbed the whole time; the weakness is a modern, graded thing.
  • The biggest money keeps landing on older cards: a 2008 Diamond & Pearl Great Encounters Palkia LV.X PSA 10 sold for $204,000 at Fanatics Collect. Our own PSA 10 slabs have moved at a $21,000 median over the last 90 days.
  • Same set, same rarity, different Pokémon: Charizard sells at 14.3× the median card of its rarity, Eeveelutions 6.1×, Pikachu 3.9×. If you collect the art and not the mascot, the setmates are the bargain.
  • Phantasmal Flames is the most top-heavy set: Mega Charizard X ex at $610 is 60% of the master set's cost. Sealed prices track total card value, not how much sits in one card — that box has no cushion if the chase slips.
  • Chasing beats buying only in the movies: Umbreon ex sells for $1,208, and pulling one takes roughly $20,000 of packs. The same art in Japanese is $399; recent Japanese printings run 0.68× the English.

Our read on the week, from the people who buy and sell these cards. Opinion, not financial advice.

  • Sealed product trades at a median 2.14× the value of the cards inside it; that premium is what you give up by opening.

  • Sealed prices do not discount one-card sets: across 23 sets, pack price tracks the value of the cards inside (rank correlation 0.92) but not how much of it sits in one card (0.04). If a set's chase falls, its sealed price has nothing priced in.
  • One-card sets (top card ≥ 40% of the set): Phantasmal Flames.

Master set = one of every card in every printing TCGplayer lists (reverse holos and Poké Ball / Master Ball / ball patterns included; code cards and sealed excluded). Share = card price ÷ master-set cost.

High confidence

Across 789 chase cards, Cardmarket's 7-day average is 3% dearer than TCGplayer overall — but sets under 6 months old are 34% dearer in Europe and sets over 2 years old are 15% cheaper.

  • The hottest chases cost more in Europe: Pikachu ex (Ascended Heroes) €756 ≈ $846 vs $640; Mega Charizard X ex (Phantasmal Flames) €781 ≈ $874 vs $598; Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex (Destined Rivals) €489 ≈ $547 vs $335.
  • To import EU→US after the 10% tariff, fees and ~$40 shipping, the EU price must be below 54% of the US price on a $100 card and 86% on a $1,000 card; under ~$45 it never pays.
  • Week over week the overall EU ÷ US median moved +1.8%.

Language blend: Cardmarket's price guide mixes English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese copies and all conditions of a card, so it understates what an English near-mint copy costs in Europe — 'cheaper in Europe' is overstated and 'dearer in Europe' understated. • Card value (market) = every card at TCGplayer market price; sellable = cards ≥ $1 at market less 13.25% TCGplayer fees, cards < $1 at cash bulk rates ($8 / $15 / $80 per 1,000).
  • Rarities with no measured odds (Black White Rare, RGB Mew, Ascended Heroes ball patterns) and god packs are left out of every EV rather than guessed.
  • Sets released under 30 days ago are flagged 'settling' and kept off the landing tiles; sets without published odds show no EV.

Pack contents: 4 commons, 3 uncommons, a rare slot and two reverse-holo slots per 10-card pack (30th Celebration: 5-card packs).
