Modern PSA 10 premiums keep shrinking while vintage pulls away

The week in the Pokémon card market: our take, the biggest price moves, the news and what's coming.

Cofre's take
  • The gap between a modern chase card raw and that card in a PSA 10 keeps closing, and the squeeze has steepened over the last few months. Vintage 10s have climbed the whole time; the weakness is a modern, graded thing.
  • The biggest money keeps landing on older cards: a 2008 Diamond & Pearl Great Encounters Palkia LV.X PSA 10 sold for $204,000 at Fanatics Collect. Our own PSA 10 slabs have moved at a $21,000 median over the last 90 days.
  • Same set, same rarity, different Pokémon: Charizard sells at 14.3× the median card of its rarity, Eeveelutions 6.1×, Pikachu 3.9×. If you collect the art and not the mascot, the setmates are the bargain.
  • Phantasmal Flames is the most top-heavy set: Mega Charizard X ex at $610 is 60% of the master set's cost. Sealed prices track total card value, not how much sits in one card — that box has no cushion if the chase slips.
  • Chasing beats buying only in the movies: Umbreon ex sells for $1,208, and pulling one takes roughly $20,000 of packs. The same art in Japanese is $399; recent Japanese printings run 0.68× the English.
