Hacker convicted in $53M crypto theft spent some of it on rare Pokémon cards
A Maryland man was convicted in Manhattan of stealing about $53.3 million from crypto exchange Uranium Finance in April 2021 and laundering the funds, with some money going to rare Pokémon and Magic cards, Dexerto reports. Seized items included a Black Lotus.
A reminder that part of the demand at the top of the collectibles market in recent years was not collectors' money at all. Cards seized as evidence can sit for years and may resurface through forfeiture sales. Between this and the separate $24,200 Poncho-Wearing Pikachu case, taking crypto payment on a big card deal carries obvious risk.
Our read, from the people who buy and sell these cards. Opinion, not financial advice.
